CAPIT Reading: Proven to Accelerate Early Literacy Development and Kindergarten Readiness
An Evaluation by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education (JHU CRRE) in one of the nation’s largest school districts.
Study Overview
This study was conducted by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education (JHU CRRE), which conducted a comprehensive evaluation with 1,488 pre-kindergarten students across 80+ schools in central Florida in one of the nation’s largest districts.
Key Findings
2.16 times more likely to achieve kindergarten readiness: With CAPIT, students enter Kindergarten ready to learn! Roughly 68 out of every 100 CAPIT students were estimated to be ready for kindergarten, compared to only 32 out of every 100 non-CAPIT students across the comparison group.
Two Extra Months of Learning: Students using CAPIT for at least 30 days gained 41.19 additional scale score points, equivalent to 46 extra days of learning in a 180-day school year—that’s an additional 2 months of school!
Among students who use CAPIT, the amount of program use appears to be significantly correlated with the extent of students’ literacy development—with more use corresponding with greater gains.
All Students Benefited: The study controlled for gender, race/ethnicity, IEP status, age, economic status, and baseline reading performance—proving that CAPIT supports all learners.
Teachers praised CAPIT’s systematic Sound-to-Print Methodology and mastery-based learning model and reported that their students find CAPIT lessons and activities to be engaging.
Why This Matters
This study provides clear, research-backed evidence that CAPIT accelerates early literacy development. CAPIT’s approach ensures that students are:
Engaged and motivated in their learning.
Building strong foundational literacy skills.
Better prepared for kindergarten and beyond.
Most importantly, we’re seeing preschoolers reading and spelling before kindergarten with an age-appropriate, engaging approach that kids love—putting them a full year ahead of their peers!
What’s Next?
We’re looking to partner with districts and departments of education to bring these results to preschools across the nation.
