Relevant to all new and returning teachers and coaches implementing the CAPIT Reading Curriculum. Open to all staff members supporting PK-5 instruction.
Module 1
The Science Behind
CAPIT Reading
Participants will be introduced to the science-based concepts behind the CAPIT Reading Curriculum: Cognitive Load Theory, Visual Mnemonics, and a Sound-to-Print approach to reading instruction.
Deliverables: An introduction to Cognitive Load Theory; hands-on practice with the Teacher Scripts; speaking clearly about letter names and sounds; Using science-based Visual Mnemonics; an introduction to the Sound to Print Revolution.
Module 3
Explicit and Systematic
Phonics Instruction
This session is designed to equip educators with the skills necessary for explicit and systematic phonics instruction. It covers all essential reading skills, such as letter recognition, blending, and segmenting. Participants will learn effective methods to teach students the relationship between letters and their corresponding spoken sounds.
Deliverables: Modeling phonics lessons and assessments; small-group practice with feedback.
Module 2
The Sounds of English:
Phoneme Check-In
This session enhances educators' skills in identifying and accurately pronouncing English phonemes—the smallest units of sound that distinguish one word from another. Participants will master the correct pronunciation of each phoneme in the English language through explicit instruction and deliberate practice.
Deliverables: The CAPIT Pronunciation Guide; small-group practice with feedback.
Module 4
Successful Strategies for Struggling Students
This module addresses the challenges faced by students who struggle with letter sounds. Participants will learn to understand the reasons behind these struggles and implement targeted interventions to accelerate student progress. Participants will learn to use our Evaluation Cards to assist students who have difficulty recalling or blending letter sounds to form words.
Deliverables: Learning to assess and remediate struggling students; small-group practice with feedback.
